| Arlo was given the Chinese name, Shao Ying by an exchange student from China shortly after he arrived in our home in 1990. He said he was a little one with great courage. We gave him the name Arlo after the folk singer Arlo Guthrie. As a puppy Arlo showed enormous respect for two birds that were in our home, a blue parakeet named Jackie and a cinnamon cockatiel named Margie. He refused to play with the toys that Jackie would throw down on the floor, and would only play with toys given to him. In order to get Arlo to accept a toy, we had to hand it to him and let him know it was for him. Throughout his long life, Arlo showed much love and affection to the people and animals in his life. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| One special memory I have of Arlo was when he was four and we went for his usual walk. He had not been on his usual walking route for a few weeks after he had surgery to remove a salivary cyst. As we walked past one house, an elderly lady came out to her porch and asked if he had been sick because she had not seen us pass by for some time. I told her Arlo had surgery, but was doing fine now. She invited us into her home, where she shared pictures of her pekingese that had passed away several years before. She gave Arlo some treats and told me how much she enjoyed looking out of her home to see Arlo on his walk. It was wonderful to know Arlo gave her so much joy as he passed by her home. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Arlo's life seemed to have more than its share of illness. He had a navel infection which kept the breeder from selling him with the rest of the litter, and allowed us to adopt him from her after his recovery. He suffered from allergies as a puppy and had two ruptured discs at three and seven years of age. After the second ruptured disc, one of his back legs was paralyzed. The vet recommended complete crate rest rather than put him through surgery. Arlo was confined to his crate without complaint for a couple of months while the injury healed. It was a proud day when I walked into the vets office three months later with Arlo by my side for his exam with no paralysis. At the age of twelve, Arlo suffered two strokes and began to have siezures. I was so sure that he would not be with us much longer that I bought a plot for him in a pet cemetery, and a friend built him a handcrafted casket. Arlo recovered and lived four more years. Those four years are the most precious to me. As he grew older, it seemed his unique individuality shown even more brightly in a calm serenity and nobility. I will always cherish the love and trust he showed and the companionship he so freely gave. The most wonderful gift that he gave me during those years was an increased respect and love for all living things.

In the house of long life
I will wander. In the house of happiness I will wander. With beauty before me I will wander. With beauty above me I will wander. With beauty below me I will wander. In old age traveling On the trail of beauty I will wander. It shall be finished in beauty. - NIGHT CHANT OF THE NAVAJO |
