Prayer Flags

Little Lotus Hearts is very proud to offer traditional Tibetan Prayer Flags. Prayer flags are an ancient Tibetan Buddhist custom. They are hung high from high places with prayers or aspirations in mind, which are then carried by the winds. Flags remain in place until weather, age, or other forces of nature blow them away or disintegrate them.

Prayer flags are the physical manifestation of aspirations for either the living and the deceased. One may hang prayer flags to help loved ones achieve long life, good health, success and happiness, or to overcome negative obstacles. Prayer flags for the deceased help purify karma, leading to a happier and higher rebirth. Generally, flags for the deceased are hung within the first forty-nine days after passing; however you can purchase prayer flags to honor your animal companion at any time.

Little Lotus Hearts offers two kinds of prayer flags. Our "small" prayer flags are a string of five flags, each a different color--blue, white, red, green, and yellow--representing the five elements: sky, wind/air, fire, water, and earth. The flags are the product of a great deal of labor by the Anes and Lamas at Walden Temple. Wood blocks are carved with prayers and images of deities, then coated in ink and pressed into either silk or cotton cloth.

When you order a string of prayer flags, you have the option of having them shipped to you or of having them hung at Tsechen Kunchab Ling Temple, located in Walden, New York. If you choose to have the flags placed on Temple grounds, prayers will be said on behalf of your pet or pets as they are hung. You may include names, photos, and/or aspirations for your pet or pets with your order; these will be kept in mind as part of the hanging ceremony.

Our "large" prayer flags stand on a pole over ten feet tall. These are probably best suited for placement at the Temple's memorial grounds. You may choose the primary color. As with the smaller flags, you may include names, photos, and/or aspirations for your pet or pets with your order.

With any prayer flag order, additional prayer services may be purchased for an extra fee. Services for the long life and happiness of healthy companions are described here. Services for the sick or ailing, such as the Medicine Buddha prayer, are described here. Prayers and rituals for liberation, blessings, and higher rebirth for deceased animal companions are described here.
