White Tara is a female bodhisattva who according to legend was created form the tear of Avalokitesvara (God of compassion). She is also known as Sitatara or Svetatara and represents the maternal aspect of compassion. White Tara is the protector of sentient creatures as they cross the ‘Ocean of Existence’. Historically the White Tara was one of the two wives of the Tibetan king, Srongtsen Gampo, who brought Buddhism to Tibet. She is recognized by the seven eyes in her head, the palms of her hands and the soles of her feet. In this way she can perceive anyone who needs her help in any direction.
