Green Tara is a female bodhisattva who was born from the tear of Avalokitesvara (God of compassion). She is also known as Sitatara or Svetatara and represents the maternal aspect of compassion. Her name is related to the term “cross over,” as she protects sentient beings as they are crossing the ‘Ocean of Existence’ and is seen as a protector against all dangers. Historically the Green Tara is related to one of the two wives of the Tibetan king, Srongtsen Gampo, who brought Buddhism to Tibet. She is recognized by her green color and her left foot which is resting on a lotus flower.
