MANI STONES

Mani stones are hand carved Tibetan prayer stones used for two basic purposes. The first purpose of a Mani stone is to remove obstacles for living sentient creatures, while the second purpose is to purify the karma of the deceased being, so that it may more easily and successfully move on to a higher, happier rebirth.

Mani Stones come from an ancient Tibetan Buddhist religious custom and can be carved with text or pictures as symbols of great respect. These items are extremely unique, in that each one is hand carved by Thupa, who is a master craftsman pictured at the right. None of this work is done by machine and with each scratch of the chisel a prayer is recited.

These items are available for sponsorship to be placed in the memorial garden in honor or your beloved friend or in our orchard. It is also possible to order one of these wonderful pieces for display and remembrance in your home.

As you scroll down this page you will find an example of a typical mantra often found carved on Mani stones, however, you can order a Mani stone with any mantra of your choosing, and as you can see in the photographs of some of the examples of Mani stones, you also have the option of ordering a Mani stone without text, but simply with a desired image. OM MANI PADME HUNG is a very common prayer to have carved on a MANI stone. This is the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of all the Buddhas’ great compassion. It is traditionally written in six colors, symbolizing the closing of the door to birth in the six realms. This mantra causes one who recites it or one who hears it to be born in the pure realm of Amitaba. The six realms and their beings, as well as their respective colors are detailed below.

OM: White.
Closes the door to birth in the god realms and the agony of falling from exalted positions to lowly ones.

MA: Green.
Cuts birth as a semi-god and their suffering of quarreling and jealousy

NI: Yellow.
Cuts the suffering of human birth in an inferior situation and eliminates the suffering of poverty and destitution.

PHAT: Blue.
Closes the door of suffering as a hungry ghost and liberates one from the suffering of hunger and thirst.

ME: Red.
Closes the door to animal birth and their suffering from lack of understanding and dullness.

HUNG: Black.
Closes the door to hell beings birth and helps to liberate them from the suffering of hot and cold and causes birth in Sukavati.

In a simplified explanation, according to King Tsongtsen Ganpo, an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, recitation of this six syllable mantra will accomplish the six perfections where:

OM is the perfection of giving
MA is the perfection of morality
NI is the perfection of patience
PHAT is the perfection of diligence
ME is the perfection of meditation
HUNG: is the perfection of wisdom
